OJ Simpson book auction canceled
LOS ANGELES - A court-ordered auction of the rights to O.J. Simpson's quasi-confessional book “If I Did It" was canceled because the former football star's surrogate company has declared bankruptcy, an attorney for the father of murder victim Ron Goldman said Monday. But Fred Goldman said he would ask a U.S. bankruptcy court to sell him the book rights as part of a campaign to collect some of the $33.5 million in damages Simpson was ordered to pay in 1997, lawyer David Cook said. “O.J. Simpson just hired the federal bankruptcy trustee as the auctioneer," Fred Goldman's lawyer, David Cook, said. The auction had been scheduled for Tuesday with the proceeds going to Goldman. The book, which was scrapped in November amid a public furor, was billed by publisher HarperCollins as a hypothetical account of how Simpson could have murdered his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman — though he maintains his innocence of the crime.

BCE: A Bidding War Target for the World's Second Largest Buyout
John Bethel submits: Portfolio holding BCE (BCE) may be the target of a bidding war. One bidder looks to be a group led the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, with the competing group being Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and a group of Canadian pension-fund managers. Frederic Tomesco and Chris Fournier report for Bloomberg: "BCE's officially in play now and I think it's definitely a good thing,'' said Jonathan Popper, a portfolio manager at MFC Global Investments, which oversees the equivalent of $80 billion, including BCE shares. More: The bids may reach the "low to mid-40s,'' Popper said. A buyout of BCE would be the world's second largest, after the $31 billion acquisition of Texas power producer TXU Corp. (TXU) by KKR and TPG Inc., excluding debt.
$40 million in art on the block. Quite a month.
Fourteen big auctions of art works worth more than $40 million will be held in Melbourne and Sydney over the next month – the largest number ever run in Australia in such a short time. Cashed-up collectors and investors have already set new records for paintings this year while a market loaded with money has attracted more auctioneers hoping to generate a profit from pictures. Bonhams, which claims to be one of the largest fine art auction houses in the world, is launching its new Melbourne sale rooms tonight under the Bonhams & Goodman shingle. The Sydney-based firm expects 300 guests from the arts, banking and legal professions, together with dealers and private collectors, will be present when Melbourne Lord Mayor John So opens the new gallery in Malvern Road, Prahran. The sale room starts off a series of auctions it estimates will generate $7 million on Sunday when 185 pieces of jewellery and collectibles go under the hammer, to be followed by a further 311 objects from the Neville Locker collection in Sydney on Sunday week.
