Asus auctions unique red laptop for Comic Relief

There's literally only one red Asus S6F laptop on the planet, and if you want to avail yourself of the opportunity to win it - and do some good into the bargain - visit eBay or Harrods this weekend.

Asus is offering the machine for auction, with bidding taking place online at ebay.co.uk and at retailer MicroAnvika's store-in-a-store on Harrods' third floor. The one-of-a-kind laptop will go to the highest bidder while all the proceeds go to Comic Relief.

The notebook is clad in red leather and comes bundled with a suitably hued mouse, mousemat and carrycase.

The auction kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, 31 March at 3pm BST and ends on Monday, 9 April at 3pm BST.

MONTREAL - BCE Inc. has put itself into play, sparking a potential bidding war among Canada's top pension funds for Canada's largest telephone company.

BCE, the parent of Bell Canada, said yesterday it had entered into talks with a group that includes Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP), Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec, Public Sector Pension Investment Board and U.S. privateequity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts &Co. about a possible buyout.

"This is an expression of intent, and we are heading into a period of due diligence," said Ian Dale, a CPP spokesman.

Committed Collector

When Evanston resident Lionel Carter purchased his first baseball card, Babe Ruth was still hitting home runs.

Seventy-four years and about 50,000 cards later, Carter, 89, has been forced to put his collection up for sale.

Burglars ransacked Carter's home last November. They took his wife's jewelry and emptied a drawer filled with a number of his baseball cards.

The stolen cards were recovered, but the jewelry was not. Carter feared the thieves would return. He said the police gave him two options to ensure his safety: Either put the cards in a safety deposit box or sell the collection.

"I sold every one of the cards because I didn't want anything to remind me of them," Carter said. "They meant so much to me (after) so many years of collecting.

Indian art auctions go beyond estimates

KOLKATA: As the art auction market stabilises, artworks of top artists are selling well above their presale high estimates. In the recent past, lots of select artists that went beyond presale high estimates, range between 30% to 100%. In overseas auctions of Indian art, 60% to 95% of the lots went past the higher estimate levels. A peek at the results gives a glimpse of the picture. In 2000, 50% of Akbar Padamsee's works in international auctions crossed the high estimate. In 2002, 100% of his lots crossed the high estimate. In 2003, it hovered at 57%, climbing to 75% in 2004, 81% in 2005 and dropping a little to 63% in 2006. In 2002, 100% of Ganesh Pyne's works at auctions abroad outstripped the pre-auction high estimates. In the following year, 66% of Pyne's works went beyond the presale high; in 2004, it was placed at 80%, in 2005, 33% of the lots were higher and in 2006, another 33% crossed the highest-projected prices.
