Kovels' List of Top Antiques Searches Reflect Current Events

Kovels has released the Top 20 list of antiques and collectibles for March based on results of hundreds of thousands of searches on its website. The top three searches - Pottery, Glass and Furniture - rarely change and are always the major areas of interest because they are useful antiques or collectibles found in every home. But the other items reflect a special interest often influenced by current news or auctions.

For example, the recent ruling against selling war medals has created a problem for dealers and a change in prices of World War II souvenirs so it moved to number 10. The auctions of several large toy collections created extra publicity and interest in toy prices, and Toys made it into the 7th position. The entire top 20 list follows:

Pottery and porcelain Glass Furniture Jewelry Bottles Metals Toys Prints, pictures, paintings, paper Royal Doulton World War II Stoves Coca-Cola Advertising Alabaster Silver plate Lighters Folk art Occupied Japan Weapons Music

La Tasca bidding war hots up as Tchenguiz trumps rival’s offer

THE bidding war for tapas themed restaurant chain La Tasca intensified yesterday after the consortium led by property magnate Robert Tchenguiz again raised its offer to trump rivals, Tragus.

The news sent shares in La Tasca up 2.5%, or 5p to close at 203p, with analysts predicting a further ratchetting up of the bid price.

Iranian-born Tchenguiz cranked up his offer 6% to £104.2m yesterday, the equivalent of 200p-a-share. That tops a 192p-a-share bid last week from the restaurant group Tragus, which is owned by private equity firm Blackstone.

You are bidding on another house, only to be outbid again. The housing market is hard. Not only does being outbid mean that you need to pay another months rent, it also means that housing prices will increase about 100 pounds a day until you bid again. .

Sideshow | Madonna ends 6-day Malawi visit

Madonna jetted out of Malawi yesterday after a six-day visit to the impoverished homeland of the toddler she wants to adopt, David Banda.

Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie, took custody of Banda last October after finding him in an orphanage. Critics said the star used her celebrity status to circumvent Malawian adoption laws - allegations she denies.

The 20-month-old toddler waved to the bodyguards and driver who had escorted him during the visit. Madonna, wearing a straw hat, did not look back as she disappeared into the jet with her daughter Lourdes, 9.

The star and her entourage spent their time visiting orphanages, projects for street children, and agricultural development programs, as well as opening a day-care center financed by her charity, Raising Malawi.
