Savannah should feel effects of Legends

It's not when the Champions Tour finishes its pass through the city and moves on to the next stop, even if that always does leave a sense of satisfaction for having seen another successful event here. And it's not when the last story after 26 straight days of work is filed, although that's certainly a good one, too.

It's when the professional staff at The Club at Savannah Harbor gets their course back.

For more than a week, these guys who love golf have come to work every day and seen their course in the best shape it will be in all year. They have looked out from the steps of the clubhouse and seen cross-striped fairways and baby-smooth putting greens. They have seen the television shots of conditions plush enough for a prestigious professional tournament.

And they haven't been able to touch any of it.

Ashurst faces Kirkland in tapas bidding war

Ashurst and Kirkland & Ellis are going head-to-head as their respective clients are locked in a bidding war for tapas restaurant chain La Tasca.

Ashurst client Tragus, which is owned by private equity house Blackstone, made a 96m recommended bid yesterday (28 March) for the AIM-listed restaurant, which is being advised by Dickson Minto.

But property tycoon Robert Tchenguiz's investment vehicle R20 has countered that with a rival 98m bid, working with Icelandic bank Kaupthing.

Kirkland partner Raymond McKeeve is advising Tchenguiz, a client McKeeve brought with him to the US firm when he left Linklaters last April along with private equity partner Graham White. Eversheds partner Stephen Nash is leading a team advising Kaupthing on the joint approach.

R20 and Kaupthing had made a previous bid for La Tasca at 190p a share prior to Tragus's approach.

New Brunswick base bids farewell to fallen soldier

A Canadian Forces base in New Brunswick paid tribute to a comrade killed in Afghanistan Saturday, marking the end of a difficult week for Canada's military.

Trooper Patrick James Pentland, 23, a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons who was killed in Afghanistan on April 11, was buried with full military honours on Saturday — the last funeral for eight soldiers killed during Canada's deadliest week of combat in Afghanistan.

The 800 mourners who attended the funeral service at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown near Fredericton, heard how he loved children so much he once asked about adopting an orphaned Afghan child.

"He loved children," Pastor Alex Varga told the funeral service.

Although the Dragoons are based at CFB Petawawa in Ontario, Pentland had served earlier at Gagetown and his family still lives near the New Brunswick base.

Foot Locker bids for Genesco

Foot Locker Inc., which wants to expand into the specialty footwear sector, went public Friday with an unsolicited $1.2 billion cash bid for retailer Genesco Inc.

The $46-per-share bid represents a 26 percent premium to Genesco's average share price in the one-year period prior to April 4, when Foot Locker first sent a letter to Nashville-based Genesco expressing takeover interest.
