PPR bidding for Puma

Luxury retailer Pinault-Printemps Redoute (PPR), owner of the Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen fashion houses, has tabled a 3.6 billion offer for Puma. PPR already owns a 27% stake in PUMA, acquired from coffee millionaires Gunther and Daniela Herz. The fit between PUMA and PPR is thought to be good, with PPRs global retailing expertise offering a major springboard for PUMA, which in turn will help PPR fill a gap in its daytime fashion offer.

Lively jobs report fails to jolt stocks

Stocks barely budged in thin trading Monday, as many traders took an extra day off after the Easter holiday. Trading was closed in Europe. There was no delayed reaction to last Friday's strong report on U.S. job growth in March.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 8.94 points, to 12,569.14. Gains by McDonald's and Intel accounted for the Dow's advance. Altria Group and Exxon Mobil were the biggest Dow losers.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index posted a slim advance but the Nasdaq composite index and Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks declined slightly. There were more declining stocks than winners on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq market.

Rumors of buyouts of public firms by private investors continued to lift stock prices.

Experts suggest bidding for broadcasting licenses

Claiming it is the optimal mechanism to preserve diversity and plurality as to information, the joint judge of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia, Guillermo Puyana, suggested granting broadcasting licenses through public biddings.

His proposal came following his speech at an international seminar taking place in Caracas called "Freedom of Expression in Democratic Societies."

When asked about President Hugo Chávez Government's threat not to renew a broadcasting license for private TV network RCTV, Puyana conceded the State has the capacity to renew licenses or not. However, he suggested that radiofrequencies should be subject to transparent and equitable biddings.

"Regarding the issue of RCTV, if I was in a position to choose, I would rather open a bidding process (on the broadcasting license), in order to preserve information diversity."
