Kelsey Hoffman, a junior at Virginia Tech, was headed to the academic athletic building Monday morning when police cars sped past with their sirens on. "I really didn't think much of it," said Hoffman, whose parents live in Tequesta. "I just thought maybe someone was speeding or something. I was like, it's Blacksburg, nothing's going on." .
US Bids and IPOs light up Stewardship
The bid for SLM, one of the largest holdings in the ethical Stewardship International Fund, managed by F&C's Sophie Horsfall, has seen the company's share price sky rocket 35 per cent since the end of last month.
According to Horsfall this is one of the few financial companies she can hold owing to Stewardship's strict ethical screening process.
Horsfall said: "We have held SLM for several years now and started investing whilst it was still in its former guise as Sallie Mae, one of the US Government's sponsored enterprises. The company, which specialises in educational lending, changed its name when it became independent in 2004.
"SLM has been the subject of a $25bn offer at $60 a share from a group comprising JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and two private equity bidders which has pushed the company's share price up from $40.90 at the end of March to $55.31 a share on Wednesday.

BCE bidding war gets sticky
MONTREAL - CEO Michael Sabia may have opened up telecom giant BCE Inc. to a lengthy bidding war between Canada's biggest pension funds, but criticism of the potential role of powerful U.S. private equity funds is mounting. One of the potential bidding groups has the world's biggest buy-out fund Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. as a minority partner and the other Providence Equity Partners Inc., another huge U.S. buy-out firm in the same role. In the event BCE is taken private, Canadian pension funds would be passive partners seeking to bolster returns, while rapid changes at BCE would be dictated by these highly experienced and aggressive U.S. buy-out firms that would aim to cash out in two or three years, several investors said Wednesday. .
