Iran invites new reactor bids

Iran has said it will seek bids for two new nuclear power plants and will partly run them on home-produced fuel, despite Western criticism of its nuclear programme.

Ahmad Fayazbakhsh, of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, said they would be built at Bushehr, the southwestern city where a Russian contractor is building Iran's first atomic plant. Fayazbakhsh said the power plants would each have capacity for 1,000 to 1,600 megawatts. The West says Iran's civilian nuclear programme is a smokescreen for atomic weapon ambitions, a charge Tehran denies. "There are already contacts with Russian and European firms. It is expected that construction would take between nine and 11 years," Fayazbakhsh said.

The cost of the new power plants, which will be built alongside the existing facility in Bushehr, will be between $1.4 and $1.7bn, he said. "Because we have the capability to produce nuclear fuel inside the country, in the long term, part of the fuel for the reactors will be provided by Iran and the rest will be imported," he told a news conference. A Western diplomat said the tender announcement appeared to be aimed at justifying Iran's statement on Monday it had expanded its nuclear fuel programme in defiance of a UN demand to halt uranium enrichment, a process which can be used to make bombs.

Algonquin drops out of Clean Power bidding

Algonquin Power Income Fund (TSX: APF.UN) has bowed out of the bidding for Clean Power Income Fund (TSX: CLE.UN), leaving Macquarie Power & Infrastructure Income Fund (TSX: MPT.UN) the sole contender with its $226 million offer.

Algonquin Power said Wednesday its most recent bid of $5.47 per unit remains on the table, but it declined to match Macquarie's higher bid worth about $6.39 a unit.

Should Clean Power decide to accept Macquarie's offer, Algonquin said it is entitled to a break fee of $1.75 million and reimbursement of costs up to $850,000.

"Algonquin Power believes the valuation upon which the offer is premised fully values the CPIF assets," Algonquin senior manager Ian Robertson said.

"Algonquin Power believes firmly in taking a disciplined approach to making accretive acquisitions and in acting responsibly in the best interest of our unitholders.

Prices jump at mammoth auction in Paris

PARIS: The skeleton of a 15,000-year-old Siberian mammoth was snapped up at auction in Paris on Monday for over one-and-a-half times the estimated price.

Dubbed "The President", the 3.8-metre-high tusked mammoth was sold for 260,000 euros ($NZ475,231) to an unknown bidder by Christie's in Paris, compared to a 150,000-180,000 euros guide price.

The skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros dating back some 10,000 years also beat its estimated price to sell for 100,000 euros, while rare bird and fish fossils went under the hammer along with a meteorite.

The widespread media coverage of the auction has caused mixed feelings among some scientists.

Pascal Picq, a palaeontologist at the College of France, told France Info radio the risk of a commercialization of fossils could cause their decline.
