ROGERSVILLE - It seems like every time the Hale Springs Inn renovation project takes one step forward something happens to send it two steps back, but officials say it's now headed back in the right direction.

For the second time construction bids for the project have been advertised, and potential contractors will have a chance to walk around the 183-year-old inn Friday when the city of Rogersville hosts a pre-bid conference there.

The project has been four years in the making since the Rogersville Heritage Association purchased the building. The next crucial date for the project will be May 3 at 2 p.m.

Brown accused of gold bungle

BRITISH finance minister Gordon Brown faces claims he ignored Bank of England advice and sold half the country's gold stocks at the bottom of the market.

Senior central bank figures expressed misgivings about the decision to auction 400 tonnes of bullion between 1999 and 2002, according to the Sunday Times. Officials reportedly warned the Treasury in correspondence that there was a risk of losing money because the price of gold was at a low level. However, there was no formal consultation and Brown went ahead with the move. Since the auctions the value of gold has trebled, allegedly leaving the public purse STG2 billion ($A4.8 billion) worse off. The Treasury issued a robust denial of the claims, insisting the decision had been scrutinised carefully and the taxpayer received value for money.

A plan to exclude competitive bidding

I see from the front-page article of March 23rd of Net News that a plan was devised to exclude competitive bidding from the largest building project ever undertaken by the Caymanian Islands Government.

If you only have one company submitting a price, which I have now come to understand has been accepted, in no way can that be construed as competitive.

Here again, the whole system of bids being considered by Government is brought into question. Further proof of Governments way of doing business as usual.

This certainly smacks of the tainted MC Restoration debris clean up and latterly Scrap Removal bids.

If you are building a house, you decide on the basic floor plan, layout, size and in conjunction with professionals like Architects, Engineers, Designers and other construction specialists you decide on the quality of the structure, elevations, finishes, etc.
