BCE May Be Target of Bidding War as Funds Weigh Bids (Update2)

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- BCE Inc., Canada's biggest telephone company, may become the target of a bidding war.

The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, BCE's biggest investor, said yesterday it will consider leading a group to make an offer that would compete with a bid from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and a group of Canadian pension-fund managers.

``BCE's officially in play now and I think it's definitely a good thing,'' said Jonathan Popper, a portfolio manager at MFC Global Investments, which oversees the equivalent of $80 billion, including BCE shares.

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board said yesterday they started takeover talks with Montreal-based BCE, whose market value is about C$31 billion ($27 billion).

Bike Auction This Weekend

It's that time of year. The City of Winnipeg's annual bicycle auction goes this weekend at Varsity View Sportsplex on Ridgewood Avenue in Charleswood.

About 600 bicycles will be auctioned off Saturday, and another 400 on Sunday. Viewing starts at 7 Saturday morning, and 10 o'clock Sunday morning.

There's a registration fee of 5-dollars plus GST. But that means if you're bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police.. you'll get it back, no charge. The auction accepts just about all forms of payment with the exception of cheques.

Border concert to raise money for drought-relief

IN light of the devastating effects of the drought in rural and regional Australia, the youth management committee at The Retro Youth Cafe has decided to hold a drought relief concert during Youth Week, on April 14, 2007 at Hovell Tree Park, to raise much needed funds to help support those in our community who are needing assistance.

We hope to raise both money and the profile of the effects of the drought, as this problem has been raised as a high priority for our youth committee and young people utilising the cafe.

We have been busy contacting local bands, rides, local stall holders, and also co-ordinating prizes for raffles and auctions, a Miss Drought Relief fashion parade, a petting zoo and plenty more.

We have aimed to give a traditionally "youth" style event, both a rural and community feel, so that there is something for all ages to enjoy.

National Auctioneers Day on Saturday, April 21 Focuses on Charity ...

KANSAS CITY -- Auctioneers across the U.S. and world are conducting charity auctions and making separate donations to charities as part of National Auctioneers Day, on Saturday, April 21.

Members of the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) have donated more than $4 million to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital since 1995 to support this chosen charity of NAA. The hospital in Memphis, Tenn., provides pediatric cancer patients with the most advanced care available, and always regardless of the families ability to pay.

Auctioneers and auction schools conduct special fundraising auctions for this charity, and other worthy causes in their communities, in April and throughout the year. Perhaps more than any other group, Auctioneers in all specialties routinely use their fundraising skills to help their local civic groups, churches, schools, and U.S.
