Brazil's Currency Little Changed, Halting Four Days of Gains

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's real was little changed, halting four days of gains, as speculation mounted that the central bank will boost purchases of dollars to stem the currency's rally.

Banco Central do Brasil said on April 13 it would make its actions in currency markets less predictable, announcing it would no longer disclose in advance its reverse currency swap auctions.

The nomination of former Banco Santander Central Hispano SA banker Mario Gomes Toros to the central bank's board may help the bank implement other measures, including increased purchases of dollars, to stem a rally that is hurting manufacturing exports and may slow economic growth, traders said. Central bank President Henrique Meirelles named Toros to replace Rodrigo Azevedo as monetary policy director.

Barclays steps back from regulatory Dutch auction

It was pure coincidence that Monday's conference on principles-based regulation by Britain's Financial Services Authority clashed with Barclays' announcement of its agreed takeover of ABN Amro. But implicit in the reversal of the banks' earlier suggestion that the Dutch, not the British, would supply the lead regulator for the combined group is a basic principle that ought to guide any banks toying with a cross-border deal in future: regulation is not a bargaining chip to be traded along with the location of the head office, the number of board seats and the colour of the new logo.

Barclays' and ABN's tactics in setting lead supervision by the Dutch as an outline objective of their discussions always looked suspect. The proposal jumped the gun and seemed certain to rile the FSA, which prides itself on being Europe's premier regulator.

The Peak conducting a silent auction to help Larchmont/Mamaroneck ...

WXPK 107.1-FM The Peak is conducting a silent auction this afternoon to raise money to help those who were devastated by Sunday's nor'easter in Mamaroneck.

The money raised from today's auction will go to the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force. The organization which - spends approximately $5,000 every two weeks on food under normal circumstances - lost all of its food in the flood caused by the storm.

"We consider Mamaroneck a second home because of all the time we spend at Acme Recording Studios for our Peak Performances," said The Peak's program director Chris Herrmann in a statement.

"The dichotomy of life styles has been made very clear through the recent storm which wiped out the community food bank that those whose homes were flooded relied on for support.

The Danger of Charity Auctions

I have a weakness that I'd like to confess. I generally lose my mind at charity auctions. If you're not familiar with charity auctions, they often work as follows. First, there will be a silent auction, in which you make bids by writing your name or a number that represents you on sheets of paper next to items you'd like to bid on. For example, I often bid on sports tickets to get good seats to a particular game. My wife bids on handmade jewelry. The silent auction will end at a certain time---whoever has bid the most wins. It's the eBay model. The second part of the auction is usually a live auction, in which bigger items are auctioned off with a real live auctioneer. If you want to bid on something, you do so, but in this auction the bid goes on until there's only one man or woman standing.
